Course Description
Communication skills are crucial for police
dispatch personnel, and development of these
skills can make a significant difference in
critical incidents. While dispatchers often
learn exceptionally well through on-the-job
experience, formal training opportunities
for these professionals is sometimes limited
to basic functions of the job. Through
collaboration with experts from the FBI, the
Association of Training Officers of
Minnesota is offering a professional
development opportunity for public safety
dispatchers that will focus on crisis
intervention and active listening skills.
These skills form the foundation of training
for police hostage negotiators, and have
been found to be extremely relevant for
dispatchers as well. This five-hour course
will explore the concepts of active
listening and crisis negotiation from a
dispatcher’s perspective, and will include
audio/video presentations, handouts, and
active participation exercises for skill
development.
*The course, previously 4 hours long, has
been expanded to 7 hours in order to provide
attendees with additional training time and
materials in the course.
