Description: This course is
design for the new negotiator or any negotiators wanting to brush up on their
skills. Emphasis will be on theory application and skills develop through
practice, role-play and scenario based training. Students will leave with
fundamental skills of crisis and hostage negotiations. Topic areas of training
will include definitions and history of negotiations, negotiations principles
and guidelines, understanding relationships, key communication skills
development, negotiations team make up, intelligence gathering, negotiation
equipment, media & legal issues, stress and stress management, understanding
mental illness for negotiators, suicide intervention, overview of the tactical
team and operations and outside agency support, other negotiations issues and
practical exercises. Course will be limited in size to facilitate a skill
enriched training environment.
Learning Objectives: Upon complete participants
will learn the following:
- Know the history and development of negotiation
techniques
- Overview of negotiation and tactical operations.
- Apply principles of crisis intervention and bargaining
- Understand characteristics of demands and importance of
time
- Understand and dealing with the impact of stress
- In depth understanding of relationships and how it
applies with crisis negotiations from the suspects, hostages, victims and
negotiator. Stockholm syndrome will be discussed
- Apply advance communication skills to enhance the
positive outcomes in negotiations situations
- Overview and application of mental illness diseases
models and impact of chemical influence of suspects
- Elements of suicide intervention will be apply to crisis
negotiation
- Understand the make of a negotiations team and all the
critical team players
- Role of intelligence gathering sources for negotiations
- Use of negotiations equipment: phone
- Awareness of legal and media issues
- Topics issues of knowledge
will include terrorism, school & workplace settings & tactical role of
negotiatior
Bio
Jonathan Bundt
has worked in the mental health and law enforcement field for over 20 years and
is the President of Masa Consulting, Inc., a company committed to quality
training in law enforcement. He is a licensed mental health professional
dealing with mental health issues and involved in training negotiators.
Currently, he is an active member of the Minneapolis Police-Emergency Response
Unit and the Hennepin County Sheriffs Office-Emergency Services Unit as a
trainer and on-scene support advisor. He has consulted and trained several
local and regional police departments, Department of Corrections, Northwestern
University Center for Public Safety and the FBI.
Prior to his involvement with law enforcement in the United States, he was a
past Chief Inspector in the Israeli National Police-Border Patrol Division where
he responded and trained Israeli and international law enforcement officials in
the field of internal security, anti-terrorism, firearms, negotiations and close
quarter combat instruction.
