John Adie is the Intelligence Coordinator
for the Minnesota Department of Homeland
Security and Emergency Management and a
retired FBI Special Agent. John had been the
FBI’s Police Training Coordinator and
Principal Firearms Instructor in Minneapolis
and taught a variety of law enforcement
courses. John is also an Advanced FBI
Instructor and recipient of the FBI Master
Police Instructor Award. John is an Adjunct
Instructor at St. Mary’s University in
Minneapolis and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in
Education, a Master’s Degree in Educational
Administration and an Educational Specialist
Degree in Educational Leadership.
Instructional Goal
The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is
designed to familiarize trainers with the
principles of adult learning, writing
instructional goals and objectives,
developing methods of evaluation, utilizing
a variety instructional methods and
techniques, developing good presentation and
facilitation skills and developing and
utilizing instructional visuals.
Participants will write and present a lesson
utilizing the instructional skills learned
in this course.
Instructional Objectives
At the completion of the IDC , the student
will:
1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the
principles of adult learning.
2. Demonstrate a knowledge of needs
assessment and task analysis.
3. Write an instructional goal and
instructional objectives.
4. Design tests and other methods of
evaluating student achievement.
5. Demonstrate a knowledge of the various
methods of instruction.
6. Demonstrate a knowledge of good
presentation skills and overcoming stage
fright.
7. Discuss the importance of facilitation
skills in training.
8. Design and produce instructional
visuals.
9.
Design and present a lesson plan.
10.
Demonstrate a knowledge of the
characteristics of successful trainers
